LARYNGEAL TRAUMA AND SPEECH: a post about maine
It’s rare that I actually make meta posts for RVB or that I get to use my particular area of expertise to do so, but this thought has been floating around in my head for a while and I thought I’d make a big post about it since some of you might find it interesting. Look guys, I even broke out the grownup typing for you! It’s mostly about Maine and how his speech would realistically be impaired by the kind of injury we see him get in Season 9.
Big disclaimer here! This isn’t a pet peeve post or a “OMG LOOK AT HOW THEY DID THIS WRONG!!” (well, sort of). I actually quite like his limited verbal communication from a writing standpoint; I think it serves the story and his character (or what we see of it, at least) pretty well. This is more just a note of curiosity and a HEY, DID YOU KNOW?? because I’m a big nerd about linguistics. OTHER DISCLAIMER: I’m not a doctor and although I’ve done some reading about the consequences of acute laryngeal trauma, my area of expertise here is linguistics, so bear that in mind.
